PMS

REMINDER: Even though the subject of this article seems like for women, in reality it is for the men! :)

I'm pretty sure that most of you have heard or at least read about PMS. Now I'm telling this for men: If you haven't heard/read anything till this day, I am 100% sure that you have noticed around you!! So don't lie to me or yourselves please! (Here i am rolling my eyes...)

This asshole is a very serious syndrome that affects the daily lives of women heavily!

Premenstrual Syndrome(PMS) is basically a combination of symptoms, which are emotional and physical, that many women get about a week or two before their period. Some women, who i call the lucky ones, get their period without any symptoms and some women with mild sypmtoms such as bloating, headaches, moodiness etc. Instead, some women (the unlucky ones) have the severe type of PMS that becomes an obstacle to function their daily lives! This type is a related condition of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

Fortunately once the period starts, within a few days the symptoms go away. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the women who

  • Have high levels of stress
  • Have a family history of depression
  • Have a personal history of either postpartum depression or depression
may often have PMS.

PMS symptoms may get worse as you reach your late 30s or 40s and approach menopause and are in the transition to menopause. Here is the good news: If YOU CAN RESIST, PMS goes away AFTER menopause!

Beware that every woman has different PMS sypmtoms and here are some examples of these:

Physical Symptoms:
  • Swollen or tender breasts
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Bloating or a gassy feeling
  • Cramping
  • Headache or backache
  • Clumsiness
  • Lower tolerance for noise or light

Emotional or Mental Symptoms:

  • Irritability or hostile behavior
  • Feeling tired
  • Sleep problems (sleeping too much or too little)
  • Appetite changes or food cravings
  • Trouble with concentration or memory
  • Tension or anxiety
  • Depression, feelings of sadness, or crying spells
  • Mood swings
  • Less interest in sex

Unfortunately there's no single test for PMS to be diagnosed. The doctors generally ask about your symptoms and the severity of them and then track for couple of months to reach a conclusion.
If you have symptoms that

  • Happen in the five days before your period for at least three menstrual cycles in a row
  • End within four days after your period starts
  • Keep you from enjoying or doing some of your normal activities
you probably have PMS!

Here are some statistics:

  • Almost 85% of American women experience premenstrual syndrome in the childbearing years.
  • About 5% of these women are disabled by PMS due to the extremely severe symptoms.
  • PMS is most common in women between 20 years old and 40 years old, but can occur in any woman of childbearing age.
  • Patients with one child and a history of depression are more likely to experience PMS symptoms.
  • The suicide rate for patients with depression is much higher in the second half of the menstrual cycle (14 days before the period begins).
  • According to a meta-analysis study , which is published in Iranian Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Infertility(Sept. 2013), the pooled prevalence of premenstrual syndrome is 47.8% in world wide. The lowest and highest prevalence are reported in France 12% and Iran 98% respectively.
